About the novella

I started taking notes

At the plant I looked for bottlenecks. A slow machine, a missing part. There was usually something I could point to.

The diner is harder to chart. Carmen gets through the morning. Marcus has figures for things. I keep watching the room and writing down what I think I’ve understood.

Then somebody moves a chair or asks for oat milk, and I have to look again.

What I wrote down

The notes are short. Some days I can see what’s happening. Some days I write it down and hope I’ll understand it later.

Both parts

Part One is my notebook. Part Two includes “What Arthur Noticed” and accounts from the other people in the diner.

By Joe Proveaux.
